SV Boys' Track & Field Wins Two Meets
The Southeast Valley boys’ track & field team competed in two meets last week. First up was their own home coed meet in Gowrie on Tuesday, April 22nd and the Mustang Relays in Newell on Friday, April 15th. The Jaguars found themselves winning their second and then their third meet in a row this season by the end of the week. In Gowrie on Tuesday, the Jaguars scored 160 points to top second place Ogden with 137 points and third place SCC with 126 points. The boys then were able to score 170 points on Friday to secure 1st place outpacing second place Manson NW with 129 points and Alta-Aurelia with 119 points.
On Tuesday, the Jaguars were led by seven first place finishes. Winning individual gold in Gowrie were Kayden Showers (100m, 11.51), Alex Burger (400m, 51.41), Owen Nuss (800m, 2:09.45) and Colin Johnson (400m hurdles, 56.65). Alex’s 400m and Colin’s 400m low hurdles were both meet records and 2nd fastest all-time times in school history.
A trio of relays also took first place. The shuttle hurdle relay of Alex Burger, Casey Hanson, Kolton Ollinger and Colin Johnson ran a school record and meet record time of 1:02.91. The 4 x 200 quartet ran a 1:35.81 (B. Harrison, C. Hanson, K. Showers, L. Jaeschke) and the 4 x 100m relay team (D. Steadman, L. Jaeschke, B. Harrison and K. Showers) ran a meet record of 44.65 to win.
Second place finishes went to the sprint medley relay team (1:43.01), 4 x 800m relay team (9:47.51), 1600m medley team (4:06.46), 4 x 400m relay team (3:37.80, PR), Dreyvon Steadman (100m, 11.72), and Logan Jaeschke (200m, 24.03).
Winning the bronze in their events were Kolton Ollinger (HJ, 5-04”), Lincoln Akins (3200m, 10:58.31) and Dreyvon Steadman (200m, 24.22). Lincoln also ran a season best in the 1600m run (5:01.82) while Joe Kauffman (discus, 103-05”) and Kolton Ollinger (110m HH, 16.61) also had season best performances.
Top finishers on Friday night in Newell winning their events were Keelan Wellman (400m, 57.47 PR), Steven Fisher (discus, 119-04.5”), Kayden Showers (100m, 11.26), and Alex Burger (110m HH, 16.88). Winning relays were the sprint medley relay team in a 1:40.77 (C. Hanson, L. Jaeschke, B. Harrison, K. Showers), 1600m distance medley relay team in 3:55.10 (K. Ollinger, A. Burger, C. Johnson, O. Nuss) and 4 x 100m relay team in 44.51 (D. Steadman, L. Jaeschke, B. Harrison, K. Showers.
Silver medal winners for the Jaguars on Friday were Colin Johnson (200m dash, 23.74) and Alex Burger (400m hurdles, 58.05). The freshman shuttle hurdle team of Keelan Wellman, Trennis Stevens, Leo Ramirez and Caden Cramer finished 2nd overall in a freshman record time of 1:20.30.
Three other relays team also placed second overall. They were the 4 x 800m relay team (E. Tucker, D. Dorsey, L. Vote, L. Akins) in 9:27.00, the 4 x 200m relay team (D. Steadman, C. Hanson, B. Harrison, K. Showers) in a 1:35.85, and 4 x 400m relay team (K. Ollinger, O. Nuss, E. Tucker, C. Johnson) finished in 3:44.39.
Deegan Brandel (discus, 107-07.75”), Bryce Harrison (long jump, 17-05.25”), Kolton Ollinger (HJ, 5-06”), Logan Jaeschke (100m, 11.92), Drew Dorsey (400m, 58.74), Owen Nuss (800m, 2:13.83) and Lincoln Akins (1600m, 5:04.15) all won bronze. Ethan Tucker (800m 2:19.54) and Casey Hanson (200m, 25.43) both ran season best times and finished 5th overall in their respective events.
The Jaguars will compete this week at Manson in their boys’ invitational on Tuesday, April 29th before heading to Lake City on Friday, May 2nd. The Twin Lakes Conference meet will be held on Tuesday, May 6th in Sioux Rapids, hosted by Sioux Central.
