SV Boys' Track & Field at Jim Yunek Relays
The Southeast Valley boys’ track and field had a short turn around when they competed again on Thursday, May 8th at Lake City. With only two days rest after winning the Twin Lakes Conference meet and getting home later from Sioux Rapids, the Jaguars line-up for the Jim Yunek relays was aimed to get some rest for those who competed on Tuesday as well as get some JV runners a chance to compete one more time this season. Even with the completely different line-up, the Jaguars were able to end up with a third place team finish, a school record and several season PRs and top-ten all time best.
Winning the team title was IKM-Manning with 133 points, followed by host South Central Calhoun with 127 points. Southeast Valley was third with 89 points and Manson Northwest Webster was fourth with 77points.
Winning the Sprint Medley relay was the team of Dreyvon Steadman, Logan Jaeschke, Kayden Showers and Alex Burger who ran a time of 1:35.58 setting a new school record. Bryce Harrison joined Dreyvon, Logan and Kayden at the end of the meet to win the 4 x 400m relay in a time of 3:33.71 which is the second fastest time in school history.
Colin Johnson and Harrison also were 1st time competitors in the open 100m dash. Their times of 11.56 and 11.60 were the 6th and 7th fastest times in school history. Colin also competed for the first time in the 110m high hurdles, finishing 5th in 16.58. Alex Burger also finished 3rd in the 200m dash in a time of 23.61. Both Colin and Alex’s times are eighth fastest in school history.
In the 1600m run, Lincoln Akins became a member of the sub 5-minute club when he finished the nearly mile race in 4:59.0 to take 3rd place overall. The time also moved him up to 5th all-time fastest in school history. Ethan Tucker took 6th in the same event with a season best of 5:25.14.
Landon Vote and Logan Bintz picked up a pair of season best times in the 800m run while picking up 6th and 8th place points for the team. Landon ran a 2:22.17 and Logan a 2:31.49. Caden Cramer also found a season best time in the 400m hurdles running 1:11.85.
Other place winners for the Jaguars Thursday night were Steven Fisher (6th, discus), Deegan Brandel (7th, discus), Ian Brunner (8th, Shot put), Kolton Ollinger (5th-Long jump, 7th-200m dash) and Casey Hanson (5th- 400m hurdles). Relay place winners were the 1600m distance medley relay in 3rd (Kolton Ollinger, Casey Hanson, Drew Dorsey, and Ethan Tucker), 4 x 800m relay was 6th (Caden Kaltschnee, Wyatt Blair, Blaise Echevarria, Grant Farnham), and the 4 x 200m relay was 7th (Jacob Paterson, Leo Ramirez, Jaiden Johnson, Keelan Wellman).
The freshmen shuttle hurdle team of Keelan Wellman, Trennis Stevens, Leo Ramirez and Caden Cramer also improved their own freshmen record time to finish 4th. Their time was 1:15.73.
The Jaguars will finish their season at East Sac on Monday, May 12th before heading to Ogden on Thursday, May 15th for the class 2A state qualifying meet. The top 2 finishers and the next best 8 from all state-qualifying meets on Thursday will advance to the Iowa State track & field championships in Des Moines on the blue oval on Thursday, May 22nd, Friday May 23rd and Saturday, May 24th.
