District Wrestling Results

Two Southeast Valley wrestlers, 113 lbs sophomore Caelan Oakes and 285 lbs. Junior Aaron Graves punched their tickets to the prestigious Iowa High School State Wrestling Tournament held at Wells Fargo Arena, February 18-20th.  Oakes advanced with a runner up finish at the District tournament held in Humboldt, on Saturday, February 13th. Oakes opened the tournament with a scrappy Dylan Vaudt of Humboldt with Oakes eventually getting the fall late in the third period. In a Sectional finals rematch 4th ranked Tucker Stangel of Osage prevailed winning the District championship by fall over Oakes. Caelan will be making his first trip to the Well after being a District qualifier last year.

First year wrestler Aaron Graves has defied the odds in his first season by winning his first District title and the right to compete in the storied tournament. Graves took care of business pinning Logan Meendering of Algona in the first period that set the stage in the finals with another big man, Nick Bronstad of Okoboji. Unfortunately, the big man from Okoboji was unable to compete, medically forfeiting to Graves as soon as the whistle blew in the first period.

In other District action, 182 lbs Harley Bryson wrestled a tough District tournament finishing third. Harley opened with #6 ranked Keegan Bradley of Spirit Lake. Bryson hung tough the whole match eventually losing by fall in the third period trying to turn the tough senior. In the third place match, Bryson slapped his tough leg ride in the third period eventually pinning Ben Saxton of Emmetsburg. Unfortunately, no wrestleback came Harley's way as Bradley lost a tough decision to 2nd ranked Spencer Mooberry of Osage 6-4.

Juniors Zack Miller(160) and Lathe Muench(170) each finished in fourth place. Miller opened with a tough loss to eventual qualifier, Cade Shirk of Emmetsburg 6-0. In his third place match, Miller was caught in a throw late in the third period in a tight battle. Muench couldn't quite get the offense going in his first round match losing 17-4 to eventual runner up Garret Paulson of Estherville. In the third place match Muench put Weathers of Spirit Lake on his back with a nice fireman's carry but couldn't hold the strong senior down as Weathers reversed his position, put Muench on his back and pinned him.

We are excited and happy for the two guys that qualified. They took care of business and got the job done. They are excited to begin their quest to a State tournament title next Thursday. All of our District qualifiers are back next year. Hopefully, they will be hungry to improve their skills in the off season to get back here next year.
