Jaguars move to 3-0 in District play with a big 42-22 win over Garner Hayfield - Ventura

Print Version

Southeast Valley High School's varsity football team knew the rain was coming and wanted to get out on the field for a fast start coming up against the Garner-Hayfield-Ventura Cardinals in an away game Friday evening, October 5. And that's exactly what they did.

The first play of the game, Hunter Kruse delivered to Chase Swieter for a 31-yard reception. On the third play, Hunter Kruse connected with Chase Swieter for a 37-yard touchdown and took the early lead, 6 to 0.

The Jags defense forced a punt after three plays and then got the ball back. Six plays later, Hunter Kruse hooked up with Zack Graves for a 16-yard touchdown with Kyler Fisher running in the two-point conversion, increasing the lead for Southeast Valley 14 to 0. The Jaguars defense forced another 3 and punt and things were looking great for the Jags.

Five plays later the Jaguars fumbled and the whole momentum of the game changed. The Cardinals only needed 29 yards for them to score and on 4th and 10, they passed for a first then ran in a 2-yard touchdown and managed to make the two-point conversion. The score was then 14 to 8 and just like that, Garner-Hayfield-Ventura was back in the game.

Southeast Valley got the ball back and Kyler Fisher caught a quick 31-yard pass from Hunter Kruse, then connected with Mason Ackerson for a 24-yard pass, getting him to the 1-yard line. Kyler Fisher took the ball in. Hunter Kruse delivered to Nyles Johnson for the two-point conversion with the Jags still in the lead, 22 to 8.

The Cardinals kept fighting back with a 9-play drive but were forced to punt. The Jags punted after six plays. Six plays later JJ Graves got a great interception and then it was time to pound the ball. Kyler Fisher had two runs of 6 and 7 and Kenny Blunk had a nice 6-yard run. Kyler Fisher finished the drive with a 23-yard touchdown and the score was 28 to 8.

It began to rain at halftime and that made Southeast Valley very nervous because Garner-Hayfield-Ventura was a big, powerful team that are known to move the ball well under those conditions. Their opening drive consisted of 10 plays with them scoring. The score was then 28 to 14. The Jaguars punted after three plays. The Cardinals punted after three plays, then the Southeast Valley Jags punted after four plays.

The Cardinals ran their quarterback bootleg for a 65-yard touchdown making the score 28 to 22 going into the fourth quarter. The fans could feel the game again switching momentum and it was not looking good.

After both teams had stalled drives, it was time for the Jags to take over. Hunter Kruse hooked up with Nyles Johnson for a 14-yard pass and a 1st down. Kyler Fisher then popped off a 30-yard touchdown. Hunter Kruse hit Nyles Johnson for the two-point conversion and Southeast Valley was back feeling a little better with their lead of 36 to 22.

The Jags defense forced another punt.

Southeast Valley Jaguars started off with a big Nyles Johnson run of 13 and Kyler Fisher finished the night off with a 27-yard touchdown run to make the final score 42 to 22 and another victory for the Jags.

Admittedly, the Jags defense had their hands full stopping the third leading rusher in Class 2A, but were able to hold him to 119 yards on 32 carries, way below his average.

"This was another great win for the Jags," said Coach Mike Swieter. "We had a few more mistakes than we did the week before but the boys stepped up and did what they needed to do to win this game. The Jags are a little bit beat up and need a good week of practice and a good week of healing before they face Estherville next week."
