Jim Kinyon Invitational

On December 18th, the Jags traveled to Story City to compete in the Jim Kinyon Invitational in what turned out to be a very competitive tournament where the Jags learned they have to finish all six minutes of their matches. Three Jag wrestlers reached the finals: 120 lbs. Junior Caelan Oakes, 152 lbs. Senior Ty Klatt, and 285 lbs. Senior Aaron Graves but no Jags walked out the Gymnasium with a bracket and Gold medal, all finished as runner ups.

Oakes started the championship round against rated Jack Showalter of Hampton-Dumont by scoring a nice take down off a scramble in the first period leading 2-0 after the first. Showalter elected to go down in the 2nd, where Oakes put the clamps on him and rode him out the entire second period. In the third Oakes elected to take top where once again he put a tough ride on his opponent. With three seconds left in the match, Oakes gets hit for his second stalling call giving Showalter new life. With only three seconds left, Showalter scrambled to earn a 1 point escape tying the score 2-2. Late in the one minute overtime, Showalter scrambled to score a takedown on Oakes winning 4-2.

Third seeded Klatt earned his spot in the championship round by uphending his second seeded opponent from Knoxville by fall. In the finals, Klatt ran into a buzzsaw in the form of Kael Forsyth of Winterest, losing by fall in the second period.

In the battle of Heavyweights, 2nd ranked Mitchell Marr of Riceville bested top ranked Graves. Graves started the match by controlling Marr by scoring three takedowns against his opponent. Inexperience and conditioning got the best of Graves as Marr's shifty hips put Graves in a bad spot late in the second period as Marr reversed Graves, turned him to his back and recorded the fall as time ran out.

195 lbs Rylie Ferrari finished fourth; 182 lbs Zack Miller finished 5th in a tough bracket as well as 145 lbs Carson Suchan. 138 lbs Max Miller had to forfeit his 5th place match because he couldn't wrestle his placing match because of 5 match limitation in a day. 170 lbs Harley Bryson finished sixth; 126 lb Kaden Holder and 132 lbs Conner Klingson finished in 7th place and 106 lbs Spencer Suchan and 160 lbs Reed Andrews did not place.

It seemed our kids were out of sorts at times Saturday. We as a team had to contend with weather issues and some sickness within the team so overall the coaching staff thought some matches got away from us. We faced our toughest competition so far this year; this tournament definitely showed we need to continue working on our conditioning and positioning.
