Jaguars Split in Opening Night

Jewell, IA ~ The varsity Jaguar volleyball squad opened the 2021 season with a loss to South Hamilton 23-25 and 18-25. They turned things around in the second match of the night by defeating Eagle Grove by 25-19 and 25-6. 

In the first match of the night, the team served at 88%. Leading the team with ace serves was junior Madison Lane with three.  Paytin Dorsey (junior) had two ace serves while sophomore Kenna Scott had one. Dorsey and Ellie Nolte were perfect behind the serving line. The team struggled with serve receive which affected their offense since they had difficulty setting things up. Sophomore Addi Hindt led the team going 70% with her attacks with eight kills. She was followed by junior Maddie VanSickle who was 100% with her attacks and had six kills. Sophomore Breck Mills tallied four kills and was followed by sophomore Kenna Scott with two and Madison Lane (junior) and Ava Brunner (sophomore) having one each. The team only had six digs for the match. A dig is given to a player who receives an “attacked” ball from the opposing team and it is kept in play. Addie Hindt had two solo blocks and Breck Mills had one. Leading the way with assists was Kenna Scott having eight and Ellie Nolte had three.

With the Jaguars victory over Eagle Grove, the team served at 97% and had 18 ace serves. Paytin Dorsey, Madison Lane, Addi Hindt, Ellie Nolte, and Kenna Scott were all perfect from the serving line. Nolte went 15 out of 15 with five ace serves. Dorsey was 10 for 10 with five ace serves. Maddie VanSickle had four ace serves followed by Addi Hint with three and Kenna Scott with one. Breck Mills led the team with five kills. Addi Hindt had three, Madison Lane had two and VanSickle, Alex Kitchen, and Paige Weiland had one kill each. Weiland also had a solo block. Nolte had four assists followed by Alex Kitchen with three. 

The squad lost to the Warriors of Alta-Aurelia Thursday night by the scores of 19-25, 10-25, and 12-25.

The Jaguars had a tough night passing the ball and getting their offense off the ground. The team served at 90%. Maddison Lane was perfect behind the serving line and had two ace serves. Ellie Nolte served at 90% and had two ace serves. Paige Weiland led the team with three kills. Hindt, Nolte, and Scott had two kills each. Other contributing one kill were VanSickle, Kitchen, Lane, and Mills. Mills had three solo blocks against the Warriors. Lane had three digs, and VanSickle, Dorsey, Nolte, Scott all had two digs. Becca Davisson and Abby Silininger had one dig each. Nolte led the team with five assists. She was followed by Kenna Scott having two and VanSickle and Hindt having one each. Alta-Aurelia improved to 1-1 while the Jaguars fell and are 1-2 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
