June 21 Softball vs. GTRA

Southeast Valley softball continued conference play by hosting the GTRA Titans in Harcourt on Wednesday night. The Jaguars bounced back from their previous conference contest (Monday at Fonda) to defeat the Titans by a score of 7-2 in a full seven inning game.

In the first inning of play, the Jags would find themselves behind. The Titans quickly scored two in the first, but senior pitcher Maddie Vansickle and the defense behind her quickly shut them down. Maddie faced 28 batters allowing just four hits while walking zero and striking out three. Her defense behind her picked it tonight as well! The Jags saw big time plays keeping some of the strongest Titan threats at bay. Vansickle managed to retire their .500 hitter in all three of her plate appearances. Kenna Scott hustled to make a crucial out of one of the fastest base runners in the state. Alex Kitchen stole a base hit by catching the ball at her shoe strings. Everyone, with the exception of the right fielder, on defense saw action and executed, but none in more exciting fashion than junior second baseman, Leilah Olson who ended the game on a diving play at first base.

On the offensive side of the ball, the Jags were able to produce runs in all, but the second and fourth innings. In the first, Ellie Nolte would reach base immediately following getting hit by a pitch; Nolte would eventually end up on second base following the only passed ball given up by the Titan catcher. Lauren Eslick would move Nolte to third and eventually into score resulting from an error on the Titan third baseman, unfortunately, Eslick would be called out on a base running miscue.

The third inning started on a high note with freshman Brooke Peterson leading the inning off with a single and advancing to second on a ground ball hit to third by Ellie Nolte. Peterson would score on an RBI single off the bat of Kenna Scott to tie the game at two a piece.

In the fifth inning, the Jags would string together a few hard hit singles and throw in some small ball to take the lead from GTRA. Freshman Rian Schlief led the inning off with a single, advancing to third on a hit by Brooke Peterson that was fumbled by the Titan right fielder. With the freshman combo sitting in scoring position, junior leadoff hitter Ellie Nolte stepped into the box and ripped a hard hit single to the left side of the field to score both Schlief (from third) and Peterson (from second) to bring the Jags up 5-3 in the fifth.

In the sixth, junior Jordyn Rowley kept the party at the plate going by hitting a line drive double to the right center gap. After tagging on a hard hit fly ball hit by Kitchen, Rowley would score on the error made by the left fielder. Kitchen would come around to third on the throw and eventually score the final run of the game on a base hit by Rian Schlief, her second of the game.

The Jags turn right around to face the Cadets from Iowa Falls-Alden for a non-conference matchup on Thursday (June 22) before taking on the Titan from South Central Calhoun on senior night this Friday (June 23).
