Jags Drop Contest with Greene County

The Jaguar softball team traveled to Jefferson Tuesday night for a JV and varsity match-up against the Greene County Rams.

The Jaguars dropped the contest by a score of 5-7.

In the first inning, the Rams would plate four on solid contact through their line up. The Jaguar bats were slow to make adjustments at the plate until the sixth and seventh innings.

In the sixth Jordyn Rowley would get things going with a lead off double to left field followed by a walk to Maddie Vansickle. Two outs were on the board when freshman Chloe Lambert stepped into the box and blasted a single to the right center gap scoring Camryn Lane (running for Rowley) and Vansickle on a bobble by the Ram right fielder.

The seventh inning would bring three more runs across in the seventh starting with a lead off walk to freshman Lauren Eslick. Ellie Nolte would blast a single to center, moving Eslick to third from first; Nolte would advance to second on the throw. Eslick would tag up to score on a  sac fly off the bat of Rowley. Again, with two outs, the Jags refused to go down without a fight., Maddie Vansickle saw the ball well and would reach base for the second time on a walk. Rian Schlief would hit a single to the right center gap, scoring Nolte from third, advancing Vansickle to third and Schlief would end up at second. Alex Kitchen would load the bases after seeing four balls cross the plate, bring the hot bat of Chloe Lambert back to the plate. Chloe would show just how tough she is, taking a ball of the rib cage to advance to first and plating a run.

Unfortunately, the five runs scored in the last two innings couldn’t match the seven the Rams scored through the game.

Eight grader, Rian Schlief came into the game in the second inning of play and pitched six complete innings after relieving Ellie Nolte. Schlief worked a tight zone and held the Rams to just three runs during her work on the mound.

The Jags will see the Rams again in the first round of regional  play, but before that they will face the Cougars of Manson Northwest Webster on Wednesday night in Manson. JV starts at 5:30 with varsity to follow.
