Jaguar Cross Country Teams Continued to Make Huge Strides in Improvement
The Jaguar cross country teams on Tuesday night, October 5th, continued to make huge strides in improvement with their races when they competed in the SCC Invite in Lake City. Besides nine season PRs and three career PRS, the teams also had fifteen course PRs and seven medalists between JV and varsity.
The boys avenged their two point loss on Saturday to Sioux Central when they finished ahead of Sioux Central by 31 points to claim 3rd place overall. Only class 1A #6 Ogden and class 3A Kuemper Catholic finished ahead of the boys in the team standings. The JV boys claimed runner-up honors in the team race, the varsity girls were 8th in the thirteen team field.
Oscar Hanson broke the 18 minute mark for the first time in his career to finish 3rd place overall and lead the Jaguars in the individual race running 17:50 for 5k. Cooper Nuss earned a medal with his 7th place finish (18:17). Asa Haub broke the 19 minute barrier for the first time in his career, running 18:58 to medal in 16th place. Carson Suchan also ran his career best and earned a medal for 24th place (19:23). Zach Thompson was the fifth Jaguar to finish running a course PR of 20:06 to finish 35th.
Calean Oakes-Sudhish (54th, 21:02) and Kyle Johnson (59th, 21:13) both ran course PRs as Southeast Valley’s displacement runners.
In the girls’ varsity race, senior Madison Doyle ran her season best of 25:11 to finish 36th overall to lead the Jaguars. Hailey Rees was the next Jaguars to finish in a time of 25:42 in 41st place. The fourth runner for the Jaguars was Shelby Mills (52nd, 28:26).
The boys JV team had three medalists in the top 15. Xander Dorman (7th, 21:16), Spencer Suchan (13th, 22:18) and Maverick Dorman (15th, 22:35) all earned that distinction. The next two scorers for SV were Ben Thompson (19th, 23:27) and Jordan Cerwick (20th, 23:31).
Also competing in the JV race were Cole Lundgren (26th, 24:32), Jacob Snyder (31st, 26:05), Bretton Farnham (32nd, 26:06) and Jamie Dalley (37th, 27:23). Xander Dorman, Spencer Suchan, Jacob Snyder and Jamie Dalley all ran course PRs on Tuesday.
“I was pleasantly surprised with our performances on Tuesday night. This is a course that we have always struggled with coming off the meet on Saturday plus there are some tough hills in the last mile of the course. In 21 years, I’ve not sure we’ve walked away from this meet with very many season PRs. This team has really figured out some things the last couple weeks both mentally, physically and how they are starting to gel as a team. Hopefully we keep this going for the next two weeks,” commented Coach Nuss.
The Jaguars wrap up their season this week with the Bob Saunders Invite at Ida Grove on Monday, before returning to Lake City on Saturday, October 16th for the Twin Lakes Conference meet. The Jaguars will then compete at the class 2A state qualifying meet on Thursday, Oct. 21st on their home course in Gowrie.
