Jags Run Against Tough Competition at Panora

The Southeast Valley cross country teams headed to Panora on Thursday, Sept. 16th for the Panorama Cross Country Invite. Panorama’s meet is a combination of tough 1A and 2A competition on a challenging course and this year brought the additional challenge of hotter temperatures and wind.

The boys team competed against 5 ranked teams; 4 from 1A and 1 from 2A. The boys finished 10th overall in the team standings with 254 points. Class 2A-#6 Des Moines Christian was the meet champion with 75 points followed by class 1A - #1 ACGC with 78 points. 1A-#2 Earlham was 3rd with 105 points and 1A-#4 Ogden was 4th with 125 points. The Jaguars finished ahead of 1A-#18 Madrid.

Cooper Nuss picked up his third medal of four meets to lead the Jaguars with a 13th place finish in a time of 19:04. Nine ranked runners finished ahead of Cooper including the #1 and #2 class 2A runners from Des Moines Christian who also went 1st and 2nd in the meet.

Zach Thompson and Asa Haub were the second and third Jaguars to cross the finish line running 20:52 (51st) and 21:02 (53rd) respectively. The fourth Jaguar to cross the line was Carson Suchan in 61st place (21:35). After injury his ankle in the middle of the race, Oscar Hanson was able to finish the race to be SV’s fifth runner (80th, 23:01). Caelan Oakes-Sudhish (82nd, 23:05) and Kyle Johnson (87th, 23:33) rounded out the varsity line-up.

In the girls race, the Jaguars finished 14th overall in the 20 team field. Unranked, but soon to be ranked Clarinda won the girls race with 71 points. Class 2A #11 Van Meter was 2nd with 87 points followed by 2A-#13 Des Moines Christian with 88points. 1A schools Earlham (#7) and ACGC (#14) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Freshman Hailey Rees continued to lead the Jaguars running a season best 27:14 to finish 68th. Seniors Madison Doyle was next running 28:32 (82nd) and Shelby Mills finished in 32:25 (105th). Meranda Hemmestad (108th, 32:43) was the fourth runner for the Jaguars followed by Alexis Peterson (113th, 34:00). Haley Stewart was the final SV runner to finish running a season best time of 34:30 (115th).

In the JV boys race, Southeast Valley finished 6th overall with 146 points. Xander Dorman was the leading runner with a course PR of 22:45 to finish 22nd overall. Ben Thompson (42nd, 24:27), Maverick Dorman (43rd, 24:29), Spencer Suchan (44th, 24:30 and Ty Klatt (61st, 27:21) were the five JV scorers in the meet.

Also competing in the JV race were Jacob Snyder (65th, 28:19), Cole Lundgren (72nd, 28:54), Jamie Dalley (76th, 29:10) and Bretton Farnham (78th, 29:27). Ethan Buenting ran his first race of the season finishing 82nd overall with a time of 31:04.

The Jaguars will next compete at Story City on Thursday, September 23rd before heading to Pocahontas on Saturday, October 2nd.
