Print Version

The Southeast Valley boys team saw a variety of weather conditions at this year’s state track and field meet in Des Moines on May 16th and 17th.  Hot and somewhat humid conditions greeted the Jaguars on Thursday for the first day. Kyler Fisher ran an 11.62 to finish 16th place overall in the 100m dash.  He came into the meet at 20th. The shuttle hurdle team of Jarrett Loseke, Sam Hanson, Rhett Grandfield and Carter Lane also competed on Thursday, but unfortunately were disqualified.

On Friday, the Jaguars were greeted by a heavy downpour that last most of the morning for their first two events.  Mason Ackerson was unable to get a decent grip on the discus and finished 23rd with a best throw of 109’. The 4 x 200m relay team of Colton Kamp, Nyles Johnson, Kyler Fisher and Chase Swieter ran a 1:34.34 to finish 22nd overall.  Despite running in the downpour, the quartet ran their third fastest time of the year. The same four runners also competed in the 4x100m relay. Their time of 45.95 finished 22nd overall as well.

“We always hope to go down to state and improve our times and/or improve the place in which we came into state, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to do that this year in four of our events.  While we are disappointed, it doesn’t define our season or the effort the boys gave all year,” commented Coach Nuss.

The Jaguars had an outstanding season, setting 6 school records throughout the course of the year, won one meet title and finished 4th in an extremely tough Twin Lakes Conference.  The conference champions, South Central Calhoun, finished 3rd overall as a team in the state meet this weekend.

“We had an outstanding group of seniors this year and saw five of them compete for the final time at the state meet, which is always our goal.  We have four underclassmen that got to run at state that will be back next year. The team has a strong nucleus of underclassmen that are just now getting strong enough to run three or four events for the team and an 8th grade class that saw a lot of success this spring in track and field.  We are excited for next year!”
