Four Jags advance to Districts

Print Version

Four Jag wrestlers survived and advanced to District competition next Saturday at Clear Lake taking the next step to compete in the Iowa High School State Wrestling Championships held at Wells Fargo Arena February 14th-16th. Sr. Kyler Fisher(182) won his third Sectional Crown by defeating #9 ranked Sam Wigans 11-4(Clarion-Goldfield). Sr. Clayton McFarland(220) won his first Sectional Crown by defeating a tough McKade Eisentreger(Iowa Falls-Alden) 6-4 in sudden victory overtime. Sr. Carter Fluckiger(170) also won his first Sectional crown by holding off Carter Dietz(Clarion-Goldfield) 2-1 in the final. Sr. Colden Bethel(113) advanced as a runner-up losing a tough 3-2 decision to Tyler Stein(Clarion-Goldfield) in the final.

Sr. Xavier Nichols(285) and Jr. Mason Goodwin(120) finished in third place for the Jags. Nichols, wrestling on an injured big toe, lost an epic battle in overtime 4-2 to third ranked Justin Jones(Humboldt). Nichols pinned Noah Kleier(Algona) to finish third. Nichols showed he could wrestle with the best heavyweights out there, unfortunately, he also had #1 ranked Spencer Trenary of Clarion who defeated Jones 1-0 in the final.  Goodwin defeated Reece Easkins(Algona) 13-1 in his third place contest.

Sr. Sam Hemmestad(126), Soph. Jonah Siebert(145) and Frosh. Laythe Muench(152) finished in fourth place. Frosh. Conner Klingson(106), Frosh. Max Miller(138), Frosh. Mark Hughes(195), finished in fifth place and Frosh. Zack Miller(160) took sixth place.

When we face some really good Class 2A programs at Sectionals it turns into an  up and down day for the Jags. We wrestled well at times but other time the coaching staff was frustrated with some of our positioning in matches. Our younger guys and a few older guys still made mistakes in their positions and at this level it costs them whether they were on top or bottom. On the other hand it was nice to see our four guys advance against some solid competition. We have to put in solid week of practice to get ready for Districts because matchups definitely don't get any easier.

Overall it was nice to finish in third place as a team. The Jags really had a good season showing improvement throughout the year.
