"Close but not quite," at St. Edmond's dual

Print Version

"Close but not quite," was the theme Saturday as the Jags gave a valiant effort to take home their second championship of the season but came up short against a strong Eagles squad from Britt West Hancock 39-27. With only one blemish on the day, the Jags dominated the rest of the field winning 81-0 in their first dual against St. Edmond's, after lunch break AGWSR was the next victim, falling 66-16 to the Jags, and in the final dual the Jags finished strong, defeating Roland-Story 64-18 to finish the day 3-1 in team duals.

We as a coaching staff knew the West Hancock meet was going to be close. We had to win a few matches in the middle of our line up to pull out the victory. We started strong with 195 pounder Kyler Fisher starting the meet with a dominant major decision, 15-5, then the Jags won the next 5 out of 7 matches building a nice lead. After Fisher, Xavier followed with a great match eventually pinning his opponent in the third period. Clayton followed with a nice win beating the Eagles 5th ranked previously undefeated wrestler 5-2. The dual shifted to our lighter guys with 106 lbs Conner Klingson losing a tough battle by fall. 113 lbs. Coledon Bethel and 120 lbs. Mason Goodwin won big victories and 132 lbs Rylie Ferrari finished the scoring wrestling a nice match for the major decision win. The Eagles flexed their muscles a bit going on a win streak defeating the Jags from 138 up to 182. If a few matches would have went our way we would have been right in there. At 145, Jonah lost a close match in the last 10 seconds and 152 Laythe Muench battled hard against a good kid also losing the match late in the 3rd period. if we could have pulled those two matches out the score would have been tied.  At 170, Carter ran into a ranked wrestler losing a close match also, 3-1 and Alex lost by pin against another strong Eagle wrestler. Our boys continue to improve and our young guys get a little better each time our which is good at this point of the season. Coledon Bethel was voted the meet's outstanding wrestler by each team's coaching staff which was a nice feather in his cap as he had a nice day on the mat.
