Three Wrestlers advance to State

Print Version

Three Jag wrestlers punched their tickets to wrestle in the exclusive Iowa High School Wrestling Tournament February 15-17 hosted by Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Sr. Trey Fisher and Jr. Kyler Fisher make their second appearance in the big dance while Jr. Coledon Bethel makes his first appearance in the tournament. All three wrestlers finished as runner ups in their respective weight class. Trey at 132, Kyler at 182, and Coledon at 113. Class 2A first round wrestling action begins Thursday morning at 9:00 AM.

Coledon opened with District champ Chase Rattenborg from Webster City. In a very exciting match Coledon secured a takedown in overtime to win 4-2 advancing him to the finals against Clarion-Goldfield's Remington Hanson. Coledon lost by fall and Rattenborg pinned his West Marshall opponent taking third place securing Bethel's second place finish. Trey opened with a 4-0 win against Grant Nason of West Marshall. In the finals Trey met longtime foe Carson Hartnett and lost a tough battle 10-6 setting up a wrestleback with 9th ranked Carson Johnson of Clarion-Goldfield. After a tough battle, Trey secured his spot with a 8-4 decision over Johnson. Kyler opened with a second period pin against Hunter Collicott of Webster City setting up a match between two returning State Finalist, Fisher and Ben Lee of Ballard. Fisher was a finalist at 170 and Lee at 182. In a match that featured both wrestlers trying to figure each other in the first period, Lee scored a takedown in the second. Action picked up in the third period as Fisher was deep on a single leg but some good defense by Lee prevented Fisher from scoring the takedown. The match ended 3-2 giving Fisher his first loss of the season. Fisher then secured his spot by claiming a 20-6 victory over Calvin Kruse of Algona in the wrestleback. 220 lbs Jr. Xavier Nichols lost to 6th ranked James Cherry in the first round 12-4. In the third place match Xavier was caught in a throw and lost by fall in the first period ending his quest for a State Tournament bid. Nichols ends his season at 33-10.
Bethel(38-13) opens with third ranked Andrew Flora(42-1) of Adel De Sota Minburn; Lawrence(42-11) tangles with 7th ranked Chase Luensman(46-3) of Monticello and Fisher drew Hunter Maitland(33-7) of Aplington-Parkersburg.
Anytime a wrestler qualifies for the State Tournament,  it's a big deal. We as a coaching staff couldn't be happier for our three qualifiers. It's the culmination of a lot of hard work since the middle of November of last year. Nothing is a guarantee in this sport, so the boys have to work hard the next three days preparing for their big debut.
