Wrestlers end up 3rd in tournament

Print Version

After a quick turnaround, the Jags headed west to Mapleton for a night tournament in a eleven team bracketed tournament. The Jags continued to progress as they placed twelve out of fourteen wrestlers in the top six. The Jags flirted with 1st and 2nd place during the night but eventually settled for third place finishing just three points behind Manson NW and 16.5 points behind Cherokee, Washington, who claimed the team championship with 197.00 points. Five Jag wrestlers advanced to the finals, 113 lbs.Coledon Bethel, 170 lbs. Carter Fluckiger, 182 lbs. Kyler Fisher, 220 lbs. Xavier Nichols, and 285 Clayton McFarland. Undefeated 2nd ranked Kyler Fisher claimed his second MVAO title at 182 lbs., beating Treighton Subert(Cherokee) 8-2. Xavier advanced to his first finals in his High School career and made the most of it, beating Wyatt Kraft(Cherokee) 7-1 claiming his first tournament win. Coledon lost a heartbreaker 2-0 to Mason Hill(Cherokee). Coledon scored a takedown just as time expired in the third quarter narrowly missing a chance at overtime. Carter also advanced to his first finals but ran into a buzzsaw in 8th ranked Tyler Zeiman(Cherokee) losing by fall. Clayton also butted heads against Georgia placewinner transfer Enrique Maravilla(Manson) losing by fall late in third period.

138 lbs Trey Lawrence and 126 lbs Sam Hemmestad finished in third place. Trey lost a tough 2-1 decision to eventual champ Marvin Hildreth but came back to win a tough 12-2 decision against a quality opponent. Sam continues to improve each match recording a 5-4 decision over his Denison opponent. 120 lbs Mason Goodwin and 160 lbs Alex Pudenz placed fifth. Both wrestlers wrestled hard for the day finishing the tournament with nice wins. Mason is a bit undersized at 120 but always wrestles hard. Alex continues to make big strides on the mat for only being his second year of wrestling. 195 lbs Jaxon Carlson finished in 6th place while 145 lbs Colton Klingson and 152 lbs Evan McCrady did not place.
The coaching staff felt for the most part the guys wrestled really well. It's a good tournament where we can compete at. We just one wrestler short of maybe winning the team title.
